Questions

Which files can I turn into MP3?

Audio in WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, Opus or AAC, and the soundtrack of MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM videos. The MP3 is encoded with LAME, running in your browser.

Which browsers does it work in?

A recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Compressed audio is decoded with the browser’s built-in decoders (WebCodecs), which older browsers lack; WAV to MP3 doesn’t need them.

Can I get WAV instead of MP3?

Yes, from MP3, MP4, M4A, FLAC and OGG. WAV stores the sound uncompressed, so the files are larger, which suits audio editing.

How do I take the audio out of an MP4 without re-encoding it?

Use MP4 to M4A. It copies the existing audio track into an M4A file as it is, rather than encoding it again.

How does the page know what my file is?

It reads the start of the file rather than trusting its name, so a recording with a missing or wrong extension is still recognised. Then it offers the conversions available for that format.
