Terms of service

The agreement between you and us when you use FormatJet.

Last updated 22 October 2026

Who these terms are with

FormatJet is run by Taprobane Labs, LLC (“we”, “us”). By using formatjet.com you agree to these terms and to our acceptable use policy. If you use FormatJet for an organisation, you agree for it too.

The service

FormatJet converts files. Conversions that can run in your browser happen on your device; the rest run on our servers after you confirm. You can use the website without an account, free. Pro, a paid plan, adds credits and higher limits for conversions on our servers (see pricing). The API will have its own terms, shown before you create a key.

Your files stay yours

You keep every right to the files you convert. When a file is converted on our servers, you give us permission to store and process it only to convert it and give you the result, for as long as our privacy policy says we keep it. You’re responsible for having the right to convert the files you use. If you convert files that hold other people’s personal data for an organisation, our data processing agreement applies to them.

Limits

To keep FormatJet free and fast for everyone, use is limited: for example, up to 20 files at a time on the website, and 10 server conversions a day without an account (25 with a free account). Pro’s limits are on the pricing page. Current limits are shown on the site before they apply, and we may change them.

Accounts

If you create an account, use an email address you control and keep access to it to yourself: anyone who can open your sign-in emails can use your account. You can delete your account at any time; deleting it ends any Pro subscription at once and gives up its remaining credits. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the acceptable use policy; where we can, we’ll tell you first and explain why.

Pro subscriptions

  • Pro is billed monthly or yearly, in advance, at the price shown on the pricing page when you subscribe. It renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel.
  • You can cancel any time with Manage billing on your dashboard’s Billing page, or on Link. Pro stays until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and your account then moves to the free plan. We don’t refund the rest of a period, except as our refund policy says.
  • If the payment for your current period is refunded or disputed in full, Pro ends at once.
  • If we change Pro’s price, we’ll email you at least 30 days before the new price applies to your next renewal, so you can cancel first.

Credits

  • Conversions on our servers use credits on Pro; the pricing page lists how many each conversion uses. Conversions on your device use none.
  • Pro gives you 2,000 credits a month, on yearly billing too, with each month counted from the day your subscription started. Credits left when a month ends expire; they don’t carry over.
  • Credit packs are sold to Pro accounts and last 12 months from purchase. If you cancel Pro, the pack credits left wait for you to subscribe again, until they expire.
  • A conversion uses the credits that expire soonest first, which is usually the month’s Pro credits.
  • Credits are set aside when a conversion starts and used only if it succeeds. A conversion that fails, times out or is cancelled costs nothing.
  • If a payment is refunded or disputed, we take back the credits it bought that are still unspent, in proportion to the amount returned: refunding half of a 1,000-credit pack takes back up to 500 of its credits. Credits already spent stay spent, and your balance never goes below zero. A dispute counts from when it’s opened.
  • Credits have no cash value and can’t be transferred, sold or exchanged. Deleting your account gives up the credits it holds.

Payments through Link

Pro and credit packs are sold through Link, Stripe’s checkout service, which is the merchant of record for your purchase. Link takes your payment, works out and collects the sales tax, VAT or GST that applies, sends your receipts and invoices, and helps with payment questions. When you buy, you also agree to Link’s terms, including its Sold through Link terms, which checkout shows you. Your card statement shows LINK.COM*.

Prices are in US dollars and don’t include tax, which is added at checkout for your location. Checkout may show the price converted to your currency. We remain responsible for FormatJet itself: the service you buy, your credits and help with using them.

Open-source software

The converters include open-source software, used under its own licences. They’re listed, with the source code offer the LGPL requires, in our open-source notices.

No guarantees

We work to make conversions accurate and the service available, but we provide FormatJet “as is”. Converting between formats can change how a file looks or what it contains, so keep your originals. We don’t promise that FormatJet will be available all the time or that every file will convert.

Our responsibility

As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and 50 US dollars. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can’t be waived.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Sri Lanka, and disputes about them go to the courts of Sri Lanka. If you use FormatJet as a consumer, you can also bring a claim in the courts where you live, and you keep the protection of that country’s consumer law.

Changes

We may update these terms. We’ll change the date at the top, and tell account holders by email before a change that affects them takes effect. Using FormatJet after that means you accept the new terms.
