MP3 to WAV

Turn MP3 files into uncompressed WAV for editing. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop MP3 files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Audio editors, samplers and some upload forms ask for WAV, the plain uncompressed format that every audio tool understands. FormatJet decodes your MP3 and writes it as a standard WAV file in your browser, so the music, voice-over or sound effect you’re working on stays on your device.

About the formats

MP3MP3 audio

MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. Its lossy compression makes music about a tenth of the size of a CD, and every phone, car and player can play it.

WAVWAV audio

WAV holds uncompressed audio, as recorded. It keeps every detail and opens in any audio editor, but a minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB.

Converted with Mediabunny, Browser audio decoder (WebCodecs), Media engine (FFmpeg).

Questions

Will the WAV sound better than the MP3?

No. The WAV holds what the MP3 plays, so it sounds the same; whatever detail the MP3 encoder dropped can’t be brought back.

Why is the WAV so much bigger?

It stores every sample uncompressed as 16-bit PCM, the bit depth of a CD. That comes to about 10 MB a minute for CD-quality stereo, several times what the MP3 took.

Why convert MP3 to WAV at all?

Some apps, samplers and upload forms accept only WAV, and every audio editor opens it. Editing a WAV and exporting once also avoids compressing the audio again each time you save.

Why do I need an up-to-date browser for this?

The MP3 is decoded by your browser’s own decoder, so use a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. If your browser can’t decode a file, the page tells you before anything is converted.
