FLAC to MP3
Turn lossless FLAC files into MP3s for phones and players. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop FLAC files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
FLAC keeps music lossless, but its files are large and some phones, car stereos and players won’t play them. MP3 is smaller and plays on nearly everything. FormatJet converts FLAC to MP3 in your browser, so your music library stays on your device and nothing is uploaded along the way.
About the formats
FLACFLAC audio
FLAC is lossless audio: it keeps every detail of the recording at about half the size of WAV. Audiophiles use it for music libraries, but files are much larger than MP3.
MP3MP3 audio
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. Its lossy compression makes music about a tenth of the size of a CD, and every phone, car and player can play it.
Converted with Mediabunny, Browser audio decoder (WebCodecs), LAME MP3 encoder, Media engine (FFmpeg).
Questions
How much quality does FLAC lose when converted to MP3?
Some. FLAC keeps every bit of the recording, and MP3 throws a little away to make the file smaller. Higher bitrates throw away less, so pick one in Options if 192 kbps, the default, isn’t enough for your ears.
Do the song titles and artists carry over?
Yes, when the FLAC is tagged with them. The MP3 gets the same title and artist, so your music app lists it under the right name.
Can I convert a whole album at once?
Add up to 20 tracks together. Each MP3 is named after its FLAC, and “Download all” bundles the album into one ZIP.
Which browsers can decode FLAC?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, which decode FLAC with their built-in WebCodecs decoder. An older browser that can’t gets a clear message instead of a broken file.
