iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC, which many websites and content tools won’t accept. WebP is widely used on the web, and you choose its quality or a lossless file. FormatJet converts HEIC to WebP in your browser, so you can prepare photos for a site without uploading them anywhere first.

About the formats

HEICHEIC image

HEIC (HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use. It keeps high quality at about half the size of JPG, but many Windows apps and websites can’t open it.

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

Converted with libheif-js, jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Should I convert HEIC to WebP or JPG?

Choose WebP if the photo is going on a website or into a tool that asks for it. Choose HEIC to JPG if you want to keep the date and camera details, because WebP stores no photo details.

What quality does the WebP use?

Quality 80 by default, which you can change in Options. There’s also a “Lossless” option, though it makes much larger files from photos.

Will portrait photos come out sideways?

No. iPhones store a rotation with each photo, and FormatJet applies it, so the WebP comes out upright.

Do I need an iPhone or a Mac to convert HEIC?

No. HEIC is decoded with libheif inside the page, which works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, so a Windows PC or an Android phone works too.
