PNG is the usual format for screenshots, logos and graphics, but its files can be heavy on a website. WebP keeps the transparency and can be lossy or lossless. FormatJet converts PNG to WebP in your browser, so your images stay on your device.

About the formats

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Does WebP keep the transparency from my PNG?

Yes. WebP stores transparency, so logos, icons and cut-outs keep their see-through backgrounds on any page colour.

Should I use lossy or lossless WebP?

By default the WebP is lossy at quality 80, which suits photos and large images. Tick “Lossless” in Options for logos, diagrams and screenshots that must stay pixel-exact.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

WebP files are usually smaller than PNG, so web pages that use them have less to download. Converting before you upload saves your visitors data.

Can I convert a whole set of icons or screenshots?

Add up to 20 PNGs at once, each up to 64 MB. “Download all” gives you the WebP files in a single ZIP.
