Options

Large images slow down web pages, fill up inboxes and run into upload limits on forms. FormatJet compresses JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF files in your browser and keeps each file in its own format. Every row shows how much you saved, and your images never leave your device.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

Questions

How much smaller will my images get?

It depends on the image and the level you pick in Options. Strong saves the most, Light the least, and each row shows the new size and how much smaller it is.

Will compressed images look worse?

PNGs won’t, because they’re compressed losslessly and no pixel changes. JPG, WebP and AVIF are saved again at a lower quality; Balanced is the default, and Light stays closest to the original if you notice a difference.

Does compressing change the file format?

No. A JPG comes back as a JPG and a WebP as a WebP. To switch format as well, use a converter such as PNG to WebP. If you drop another format here, the page tells you what it is.

Why didn’t my PNG get much smaller?

Lossless PNG compression can only save what the original left behind, so the result depends on how the PNG was saved. If a file can’t be made smaller at all, you get the original back, never a bigger file.

Does compressing remove my photo’s details?

JPGs keep their date taken and camera details, but the GPS location is removed by default. Untick “Remove location data from photos” if you want to keep it.
