HEIC to AVIF
Turn iPhone HEIC photos into compact AVIF images. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop HEIC files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
iPhones and iPads store photos as HEIC, which keeps them small but won’t open in many apps and browsers. AVIF keeps photos similarly compact and works on the web. FormatJet decodes your HEIC files with libheif and saves them as AVIF in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
About the formats
HEICHEIC image
HEIC (HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use. It keeps high quality at about half the size of JPG, but many Windows apps and websites can’t open it.
AVIFAVIF image
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.
Converted with libheif-js, jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Will the AVIF be as small as the HEIC?
Close to it. HEIC and AVIF are both designed for compact photos, so at the default quality of 60 the AVIF stays similarly small. Move the Quality setting in Options to trade size for detail.
Are the date, camera and location kept?
No. The photo is re-encoded and the AVIF carries none of the HEIC’s details, so the location is gone whether or not “Remove location data from photos” is ticked. Keep the originals if your library sorts by date taken.
Why choose AVIF over HEIC?
AVIF is an open format that current web browsers display, while most of them can’t show HEIC. That makes AVIF the easier choice for a website, a blog or an online gallery.
Can I convert HEIC on Windows or Android?
Yes. libheif decodes the photo inside the web page, so you don’t need an Apple device or any extra software.
