AVIF to GIF
Save an AVIF image as a GIF for older apps and sites. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop AVIF files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
AVIF is efficient, yet many older programs, forums and email tools still can’t display it, while GIF opens almost anywhere. FormatJet converts AVIF to a still GIF in your browser, fitting the colours into the GIF palette. Your image is processed on your device and never uploaded.
About the formats
AVIFAVIF image
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.
GIFGIF image
GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.
Converted with jSquash, gifenc, Image engine.
Questions
Does an animated AVIF become an animated GIF?
No. You get a still GIF of the first frame; the rest of the animation isn’t converted.
Why does the GIF look less smooth than the AVIF?
AVIF can show millions of shades, but a GIF is limited to 256 colours. Gradients, skies and skin tones turn into visible bands, while simple graphics change much less.
Is the AVIF’s transparency kept?
Only with hard edges. In a GIF each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque, so partly see-through areas such as shadows end up as one or the other.
Does the GIF keep any photo details from the AVIF?
No. The image is re-encoded, and the GIF contains no date, camera or location information.
