AVIF keeps image files small, but plenty of older apps, photo viewers and websites can’t open it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens almost everywhere. FormatJet converts AVIF to JPG in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

About the formats

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Why won’t my AVIF file open?

AVIF is a newer format, and many older photo viewers, editors and upload forms don’t support it. JPG works with nearly all of them, which is why converting helps.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Usually, yes. AVIF is smaller than JPG at similar quality, so the JPG takes more space at the default quality of 85. That’s the trade for a file almost every app can open.

What happens to transparent areas in an AVIF?

They become a solid colour, because JPG has no transparency. FormatJet uses white unless you choose a different background colour in Options before converting.

Does the JPG keep the photo’s date and camera?

No. JPGs made from AVIF carry no photo details, so keep the AVIF too if you need the date taken or the camera model.
