AVIF is a newer image format that sites use to keep images small. If your images are already WebP, FormatJet can convert them to AVIF in your browser, keeping any transparency. AVIF takes longer to encode than WebP, and nothing is uploaded while it works.

About the formats

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Does converting WebP to AVIF lose quality?

The WebP is decoded and compressed again as AVIF, at quality 60 by default. If the WebP has fine detail or text, raise the quality in Options to keep it intact.

Why is WebP to AVIF slower than other conversions?

Writing AVIF is the slow part. It takes noticeably longer than writing WebP or JPG, and the bigger the image, the longer it takes.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. AVIF stores transparency too, so a WebP logo or cut-out keeps its see-through background.

What if my WebP file is really a PNG or JPG?

The page checks the file’s contents, so a picture with a .webp name but PNG or JPG data is spotted. You’ll get a link to the right converter, such as PNG to AVIF or JPG to AVIF.
