PNG files are lossless, which makes them large on websites and in apps. AVIF keeps transparency in a smaller file, at the cost of a slower conversion. FormatJet converts PNG to AVIF in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

About the formats

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Does AVIF keep my PNG’s transparency?

Yes. AVIF stores transparency, so logos and cut-outs keep their see-through areas, including soft edges and shadows.

Is AVIF lossless like PNG?

Not here. FormatJet saves AVIF with lossy compression at quality 60 by default, which is how the files get small. Raise the quality in Options if fine lines or small text start to blur.

How long does PNG to AVIF take?

Longer than converting to JPG or WebP. AVIF encoding is slower, and large PNGs take the longest, all on your own device.

Should I pick AVIF or WebP for my PNGs?

Both keep transparency. AVIF gives small files but takes longer to encode; WebP is quicker and has a “Lossless” option for images that must stay pixel-exact.
