AVIF to PNG

Turn AVIF images into PNGs for editing and sharing. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop AVIF files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

AVIF files are small, but many image editors, design tools and older apps still can’t open them. PNG works almost everywhere and keeps every pixel and any transparency. FormatJet converts AVIF to PNG in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

About the formats

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Should I convert AVIF to PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps transparency and every pixel the AVIF decodes to, so it suits graphics, cut-outs and images you’ll edit. AVIF to JPG gives a smaller file for photos but fills transparent areas with a solid colour.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF is built for small files, while PNG is lossless and stores every pixel. A photo as PNG is several times larger than as JPG, and JPG is already larger than AVIF at similar quality.

Does the PNG keep the AVIF’s transparency?

Yes. Transparent and partly transparent pixels stay that way, so soft shadows and smooth edges look the same as in the AVIF.

Can I convert a batch of AVIF images?

Yes. Drop up to 20 AVIF files, each up to 64 MB, then save the PNGs one by one or use “Download all” for a single ZIP.
