JPG to PNG
Save JPG photos as lossless PNG files, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop JPG files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
Some apps, editors and upload forms ask for PNG, and PNG is a safe format for images you’ll edit again and again, because saving it never loses detail. FormatJet converts JPG to PNG in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.
About the formats
JPGJPEG image
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.
PNGPNG image
PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.
Converted with jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the photo exactly as it is now, so no further quality is lost, but it can’t restore detail that JPG compression already removed.
Why is the PNG several times bigger than my JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel instead of compressing the photo the way JPG does. The picture is identical; only the file is larger.
Can I make the background transparent?
Not by converting. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG comes out fully opaque, and you’d need an image editor to cut the background out.
Does the PNG keep the date and location from my JPG?
No. The PNG has no photo details, so the date taken, camera model and GPS location are all dropped. Keep the original JPG if your photo library sorts by date.
