BMP to ICO
Turn a BMP image into a multi-size ICO icon. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop BMP files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
Paint and older design tools still save artwork as BMP, while Windows shortcuts and favicons need ICO. FormatJet scales your BMP to every icon size you tick and stores them all in one ICO file. The conversion happens in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
About the formats
BMPBitmap image
BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. Almost anything can read it, but files are far larger than PNG or JPG.
ICOWindows icon
ICO is the Windows icon format used for favicons and app icons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes.
Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Can I make a Windows icon from a Paint drawing?
Yes. Save it as BMP, drop it here and tick the sizes you want under “Icon sizes” in Options. They all go into a single ICO you can assign to a shortcut or folder.
Does transparency in a BMP carry over?
Yes. If the BMP has an alpha channel, its transparent pixels stay transparent in the icon. A BMP without one gives an opaque picture.
What happens to a BMP that isn’t square?
FormatJet keeps its shape, shrinks it to fit each icon size and centres it, filling the gaps with transparency.
Which sizes should I tick?
The ones ticked when the page opens cover a website favicon. Desktop icons can be shown much larger, so add the bigger sizes, up to 256 px, and start from a BMP at least that wide.
