Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
BMP is an old Windows image format that takes a lot of space and isn’t accepted by many websites. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is, usually in a smaller file that opens almost everywhere. FormatJet converts BMP to PNG in your browser, so your images stay on your device.
About the formats
BMPBitmap image
BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. Almost anything can read it, but files are far larger than PNG or JPG.
PNGPNG image
PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.
Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Will the PNG look exactly like the BMP?
Yes. PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the BMP is kept. Only the way the image is stored changes.
Will the PNG be smaller than the BMP?
Usually. Most BMP files store pixels without compression, while PNG compresses them without losing any detail, so the same image takes less space.
Should I choose BMP to PNG or BMP to JPG?
Choose PNG for screenshots, diagrams, icons and anything with transparency, where every pixel matters. Choose BMP to JPG for photos, which come out several times smaller as JPG than as PNG.
Does it work on a Mac or in Firefox?
Yes. BMP is decoded by the browser itself, and the converter works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
