Drop BMP files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
BMP files store images with little or no compression, so even a simple picture can be too heavy to email or upload, and many sites won’t accept BMP at all. FormatJet converts BMP to JPG in your browser, so the files stay on your computer.
About the formats
BMPBitmap image
BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. Almost anything can read it, but files are far larger than PNG or JPG.
JPGJPEG image
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.
Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Why convert BMP to JPG?
BMP files usually store every pixel without compression, so they’re large to email or upload, and many websites don’t accept them. A JPG is compressed and opens almost anywhere.
My file ends in .bmp, but the page says it’s something else. Why?
FormatJet checks what’s inside a file rather than trusting its name. If a “BMP” is really a PNG or JPG, you’ll see what it is and a link to the converter for that format.
How do I get the best-looking JPG from a BMP?
Raise the quality in Options. It’s 85 by default on a scale of 1 to 100, and higher values keep more detail in a larger file.
Can I convert many BMP files for free?
Yes. It’s free with no sign-up, and you can add up to 20 BMP files at a time. “Download all” saves the JPGs as one ZIP.
