PNG to ICO
Make a favicon or Windows icon from a PNG, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop PNG files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
Many websites use an ICO file for the favicon shown in browser tabs, and Windows uses ICO files for shortcuts and programs. FormatJet turns your PNG into an icon with several sizes in one file, right in your browser, so your artwork never leaves your device.
About the formats
PNGPNG image
PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.
ICOWindows icon
ICO is the Windows icon format used for favicons and app icons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes.
Converted with jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
What sizes go into the ICO file?
By default the icon holds 16, 32 and 48 px versions of your PNG. Tick 24, 64, 128 or 256 px in Options to add more; every size you choose goes into the one ICO file.
Which sizes should a favicon have?
The default 16, 32 and 48 px set works as a website favicon. For a Windows icon that may be shown large, add 256 px too, and start from a PNG at least that big so the largest size stays sharp.
Does the icon keep my PNG’s transparency?
Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the icon, so transparent areas and soft edges stay as they are in your original.
What if my PNG isn’t square?
It’s centred on a transparent square at each size, keeping its proportions, so nothing is stretched or cut off. Trim extra space around a logo first if you want it to fill the icon.
Is my PNG uploaded to make the icon?
No. Every icon size is resized and packed into the ICO inside your browser, so your PNG stays on your device. The counter under the file list confirms 0 bytes uploaded.
