WebP to GIF

Turn WebP images, animated ones included, into GIFs. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop WebP files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Animated WebP files saved from websites or messaging apps often won’t play where you want to post them, while GIF works almost everywhere. FormatJet converts WebP to GIF in your browser, keeping the animation and its frame timing where your browser allows, and the file never leaves your device.

About the formats

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

GIFGIF image

GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.

Converted with jSquash, gifenc, Image engine.

Questions

Does an animated WebP stay animated as a GIF?

In current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, yes. Every frame keeps its own timing and the GIF loops forever. Browsers that can’t read the WebP frame by frame save a still GIF of the first frame instead.

Why do the colours look banded in my GIF?

A GIF frame can use no more than 256 colours, and FormatJet builds a palette for each frame without dithering. Stickers and flat artwork come through cleanly, while photos and smooth gradients break into visible steps.

What happens to the WebP’s transparent background?

It stays transparent, but GIF can only make a pixel fully clear or fully solid. Feathered edges and drop shadows lose their softness and turn crisp.

Is there a limit on how long the animation can be?

An animated WebP with more than 600 frames is refused, because building that GIF is too much work for a browser tab. Files up to 64 MB are accepted.

Why would I need a GIF rather than a WebP?

Plenty of chat apps, forums and email programs still play GIF but not animated WebP. Converting gives you a file they all accept, at the cost of some colour depth.
