PNG to GIF

Save a PNG as a GIF for sites and apps that need one. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop PNG files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Some forums, upload forms and older programs accept GIF images but not PNG. FormatJet converts your PNG into a still GIF in your browser, fitting its colours into the GIF palette and keeping transparent areas clear. Your file never leaves your device.

About the formats

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

GIFGIF image

GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.

Converted with jSquash, gifenc, Image engine.

Questions

Will my PNG look the same as a GIF?

GIF holds at most 256 colours, so simple logos, icons and flat graphics come through best. Screenshots with gradients and photos saved as PNG lose colours and show banding in smooth areas.

Does the GIF keep the PNG’s transparency?

Partly. GIF transparency is all or nothing for each pixel, so fully transparent areas stay clear, but soft edges, shadows and glows from the PNG become hard-edged.

Can I turn several PNGs into an animated GIF?

No. Each PNG becomes its own single-frame, still GIF. You can add up to 20 PNGs at a time and save the GIFs together with Download all as one ZIP.

Why convert PNG to GIF at all?

Mostly because a site, forum or program accepts only GIF. If you have a choice, keep the PNG, which is lossless and keeps smooth transparency, while GIF is limited to 256 colours.
