Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

A PNG gives you a still image of a GIF, with every pixel kept, for a slide, a document or an image editor. FormatJet saves the GIF’s first frame as a lossless PNG and keeps its transparency. It runs in your browser, so the GIF stays on your device.

About the formats

GIFGIF image

GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.

PNGPNG image

PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Does the PNG keep the GIF’s animation?

No. FormatJet converts only the GIF’s first frame, and the PNG is a single still image of it.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. Every transparent pixel in the GIF stays transparent in the PNG, so the image sits on any background just as it did before.

Does converting GIF to PNG lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless and isn’t limited to the 256 colours a GIF can hold, so the frame is saved exactly as the GIF shows it.

Why convert a GIF to PNG?

Some editors, slide tools and upload forms take PNG but not GIF. A PNG is also an easy way to pull a still from an animated GIF, such as a thumbnail.
