PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. It’s ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos come out larger than JPG.

BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. Almost anything can read it, but files are far larger than PNG or JPG.

Questions
Does the BMP keep my PNG’s transparency?
Yes. A PNG with transparent areas becomes a 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel. Modern viewers show it properly, but some older programs ignore the alpha, so test the file in the program you need it for.
My PNG has no transparency. What do I get?
A 24-bit BMP, the common kind that opens in any image program. FormatJet picks the right type from the image, so there’s nothing to choose.
Why is the BMP larger than the PNG?
PNG compresses its pixels without loss, while BMP stores them raw. The picture is the same, but the BMP takes far more room, especially for big screenshots.
Can I convert a folder of PNG icons to BMP?
Add up to 20 PNGs at once. Each one becomes its own BMP with the same name, and “Download all” bundles them into a ZIP.
