WebP is widely used on websites, and you may need your photos in WebP for a site builder, a theme or a page speed check. FormatJet converts your JPG photos to WebP in your browser, with quality and lossless settings in Options, and nothing is uploaded.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

WebPWebP image

WebP is an image format made for the web. Files are smaller than JPG and PNG and can have transparency or animation, but some older apps can’t open it.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Why convert JPG to WebP?

Some site builders, themes and page speed tools ask for WebP images. Converting your JPGs before you upload them saves a step later.

Should I tick “Lossless” for photos?

Usually not. Lossless WebP keeps every pixel of the decoded JPG, which makes a larger file and can’t undo JPG compression. The default lossy setting at quality 80 suits photos.

Does the WebP keep the photo’s date and camera details?

No. WebP files from FormatJet keep no photo details, so the date, camera model and location are all left out. That suits images you publish; keep the JPG for your archive.

Will portrait photos come out sideways?

No. FormatJet applies the rotation your camera or phone stored with the JPG, so portrait shots are upright in the WebP.
