JPG to TIFF

Save JPG photos as TIFF files for print and archiving. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop JPG files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Print shops, publishers and archives often ask for TIFF rather than JPG. FormatJet writes each photo as an LZW-compressed TIFF that any TIFF reader opens, using ImageMagick compiled to run in your browser. Your photos are converted on your device and never uploaded.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

TIFFTIFF image

TIFF is a high-quality image format used for scanning, printing and archiving. One file can hold several pages, and files are usually large.

Converted with jSquash, magick-wasm, Image engine.

Questions

What compression does the TIFF use?

LZW, a lossless method that every TIFF reader understands. The picture inside isn’t changed, though the file usually ends up larger than the JPG.

Will converting to TIFF improve my JPG?

No. Detail the JPG compression already threw away stays missing, and its artefacts carry into the TIFF. What you gain is that editing and saving the TIFF again adds no further loss.

Why is there a wait before my first JPG converts?

TIFF files are written with magick-wasm, ImageMagick built to run in a browser, which is a download of about 5 MB the first time. Your browser keeps it, so later conversions skip that step.

Does the TIFF keep the photo’s Exif details?

No. The photo is re-encoded, so the TIFF carries no date taken, camera model or location from the original JPG.
