Icon sizes

Sometimes your logo or photo only exists as a JPG, and you need a favicon for a website or an icon for a Windows shortcut. FormatJet resizes the picture into several icon sizes and packs them into one ICO file in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

ICOWindows icon

ICO is the Windows icon format used for favicons and app icons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Will the icon have a transparent background?

No. JPG has no transparency, so the picture, background included, stays opaque in every size. For a see-through background, start from a PNG with transparency and use PNG to ICO instead.

What happens if my JPG isn’t square?

It’s scaled to fit and centred on a transparent square, keeping its proportions. Those added strips are the only transparent part of the icon; crop the JPG to a square first if you want it filled edge to edge.

What sizes does the icon include?

Three by default, 16, 32 and 48 px, all in one ICO file. Add 24, 64, 128 or 256 px in Options. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the icon, so no further JPG compression is added.

Will a photo from my phone come out sideways?

No. FormatJet applies the rotation your phone stored in the JPG, so the icon comes out upright. At 16 px very little detail survives, so a close crop of a face or object works better than a whole scene.
