JPG to GIF

Save a JPG photo as a still GIF image, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop JPG files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

You may need a GIF when a website, template or program asks for one, even for a single still picture. FormatJet converts your JPG in your browser and reduces its colours to fit the GIF format, so the photo never leaves your device.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

GIFGIF image

GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.

Converted with jSquash, gifenc, Image engine.

Questions

Will my photo look worse as a GIF?

In smooth areas, yes. GIF holds at most 256 colours, while a JPG photo can use millions, so skies, skin and shadows show bands of colour. Logos and screenshots saved as JPG change less.

Can the GIF have a transparent background?

No. JPG has no transparency, so there’s nothing to carry over. The GIF is fully opaque, with the JPG’s background kept as it is.

Does the GIF keep the photo’s date and camera details?

No. GIF carries no photo details, so the date taken, camera model and GPS location stored in the JPG are all left out.

Can I make an animated GIF from several JPGs?

Not here. Every JPG becomes a separate still GIF with one frame, and photos taken on a phone are turned upright first. Download all saves the GIFs in one ZIP.
