GIFs are often animated, but many places only need a still image, such as a profile picture, a thumbnail or a document. FormatJet saves the first frame of your GIF as a JPG in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

About the formats

GIFGIF image

GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is converted, so you get a single still JPG. JPG can’t hold animation.

What happens to the transparent parts of a GIF?

A GIF pixel is either fully see-through or solid, and in the JPG the see-through ones take the background colour. That’s white by default, or any colour you set in Options.

Will the JPG show more colours than the GIF?

No. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, and converting can’t bring back colours that were left out. The JPG shows the same picture as the first frame.

Should I choose GIF to JPG or GIF to PNG?

Choose GIF to PNG to keep transparency and every pixel exactly, since PNG is lossless. Choose JPG when an app, form or website asks for a JPG.
