JPG to BMP

Convert JPG photos to BMP for programs that require it. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop JPG files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Some older Windows programs, hardware tools and school assignments ask for BMP images instead of JPG. FormatJet converts your photos to standard 24-bit BMP files in your browser. Expect much larger files, because BMP stores pixels without compression, but your photos never leave your device.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

BMPBitmap image

BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. Almost anything can read it, but files are far larger than PNG or JPG.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Why is the BMP so much bigger than the JPG?

BMP keeps every pixel without compression, while JPG squeezes the photo down. The same picture therefore takes far more space as a BMP.

Will the BMP look better than the JPG?

No. Blocky patches or haze that JPG compression already put into the picture are copied into the BMP as they are. Converting only means no new loss is added.

Which kind of BMP do I get?

A 24-bit BMP, because JPG photos have no transparency. That’s the plain kind every program that reads BMP can open.

Does the BMP keep the photo’s date and camera?

No. The picture is re-encoded into a new file without any photo details, so its date, camera model and GPS location are left behind.
