Drop JPG files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
AVIF stores photos in smaller files than JPG at similar quality, which means less data for websites and galleries to load. FormatJet converts JPG to AVIF in your browser. Encoding AVIF takes longer than JPG or WebP, but your photos never leave your device.
About the formats
JPGJPEG image
JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.
AVIFAVIF image
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.
Converted with jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Will AVIF make my photos smaller?
Yes. At similar quality, AVIF is smaller than JPG. The saving varies from photo to photo, so try a few at the default quality of 60 before converting a whole set.
Why does JPG to AVIF take so long?
AVIF encoding takes noticeably longer than JPG or WebP, especially for large photos. Your own device does the work, so a full batch of big photos can take a while.
Does the AVIF keep the photo’s date and camera details?
No. AVIF files from FormatJet keep no photo details, which also means no location. Keep the original JPGs if you need dates for sorting.
Will photos from my phone stay the right way up?
Yes. The rotation stored with each JPG is applied before encoding, so portrait photos come out upright even though the AVIF keeps no photo details.
