JPEG to JPG

Save .jpeg files as .jpg, with no re-encoding. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop JPG files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

Cameras and some apps save photos as .jpeg, while plenty of upload forms, scripts and websites expect .jpg. Both names describe the same format, so FormatJet copies each photo under the shorter extension without re-encoding it. Everything happens in your browser, and your photos never leave your device.

About the formats

JPGJPEG image

JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, which suits photos but not sharp text or transparency.

Converted with jSquash, Image engine.

Questions

Is there any difference between JPEG and JPG?

No. They’re two spellings of the same format, left over from the days when Windows file extensions could only have three letters. Some upload forms and scripts accept just one spelling, which is the usual reason to switch.

Does changing .jpeg to .jpg lower the quality?

No. FormatJet doesn’t decode or save the picture again: the file is copied under the .jpg name, so every pixel stays exactly as it was.

What else changes apart from the extension?

Only the GPS location, which is removed by default, while the date taken and camera details stay. Untick “Remove location data from photos” for an exact byte-for-byte copy.

Can I rename lots of .jpeg files at once?

Yes, up to 20 in each batch. Every file comes back with its own name ending in .jpg, and “Download all” saves them together as a ZIP.

Couldn’t I just rename the file myself?

You can, where your system shows file extensions and lets you edit them. This page helps on phones and tablets that hide extensions, with many files at once, or when you want the location taken out as well.
