GIF to ICO
Turn a GIF into a favicon or Windows icon file. Nothing is uploaded.
Drop GIF files here
Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.
Up to 20 files at a time.
Many older logos, buttons and pixel-art graphics only exist as GIF files. FormatJet turns a GIF into a multi-size ICO for a favicon or a Windows shortcut, keeping its transparent pixels and using the first frame of an animation. It runs in your browser, so the GIF stays on your device.
About the formats
GIFGIF image
GIF is an old image format best known for short animations. It’s limited to 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files can be large.
ICOWindows icon
ICO is the Windows icon format used for favicons and app icons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes.
Converted with Browser image decoder, jSquash, Image engine.
Questions
Can the icon be animated?
No. If the GIF is animated, the icon is made from its first frame only.
Does the GIF’s transparent background carry over?
Yes. Pixels that are clear in the GIF stay clear in each icon size, so the icon sits on any taskbar or tab colour.
How do I choose the sizes?
Tick them under “Icon sizes” in Options, from tiny favicon sizes up to 256 px. The usual favicon sizes start ticked, and one ICO holds every size you pick.
Why make an icon from a GIF?
Old websites and clip-art collections often have logos and buttons saved as GIF. Converting gives you a proper ICO for a site favicon or a desktop shortcut without redrawing anything.
