AVIF images are compact, but many of the people and programs you send them to still can’t open them. A PDF opens on almost any computer or phone and keeps a set of images together. FormatJet decodes your AVIF files and builds the PDF in your browser, so the images never leave your device.

About the formats

AVIFAVIF image

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, though older software often can’t open it.

PDFPDF document

PDF is the standard format for documents that should look the same everywhere. It can hold text, images and vector graphics across many pages.

Converted with jSquash, pdf-lib, Image engine.

Questions

How do AVIF images end up inside the PDF?

jSquash decodes each AVIF in your browser, then photos are stored in the PDF as JPEG and images with transparency as PNG. Whoever opens the PDF doesn’t need an app that understands AVIF.

Can several AVIF files become one PDF?

That’s the default. Arrange them with the move buttons and press “Create PDF” to get a single document with a page per image, or untick “Combine into one PDF” for separate files.

What page size will the PDF have?

Each page matches its image unless you pick A4 or Letter under Page size in Options. Set a Margin there too if the images shouldn’t run to the edge of the paper.

Do transparent AVIF images keep their transparency?

Yes. They go into the PDF as PNG, so transparent areas show the page beneath them rather than a filled colour.
