JSON to YAML

Turn JSON into readable YAML for config files. Nothing is uploaded.

On your device

Drop JSON files here

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

JSON is easy for programs to produce, but long JSON files are hard to read and can’t hold comments. YAML shows the same data through indentation, without the braces and quotes, which makes configs easier to edit by hand. FormatJet converts your JSON to YAML in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

About the formats

JSONJSON file

JSON is the text format web APIs and apps use to exchange data: objects, lists, text, numbers and true or false values, nested as deep as needed.

YAMLYAML file

YAML is a readable text format for settings and data, built on indentation instead of brackets. Docker, Kubernetes and CI services use it for configuration.

Converted with Data converters (Papa Parse, yaml, fast-xml-parser), Data converters on Workers.

Questions

Which tools want YAML rather than JSON?

Docker Compose files, GitHub Actions workflows, Ansible playbooks and Kubernetes manifests are usually written in YAML. Converting a JSON config gives you a starting point in the format they’re normally kept in.

Will the YAML mean the same as my JSON?

Yes. Every key, value and level of nesting carries over, so the YAML describes exactly the same data with indentation instead of braces.

Can I add comments afterwards?

Yes. JSON has none to bring across, but once the file is YAML you can annotate it with lines starting with #.

Can I convert a folder of JSON files?

Add up to 20 files in one go. Every one is saved as YAML under its own name, ready to download separately or together in a ZIP.

Are API keys in my config sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser tab, so tokens and passwords in a config stay on your computer; the counter under the file list reads 0 bytes uploaded.
