JSON to Excel

Turn JSON records into an Excel sheet with a frozen header row. Nothing is uploaded.

Converted on your device. Files are never uploaded.

Up to 20 files at a time.

JSON from an API or an export is hard to scan, filter or share with someone who lives in spreadsheets. FormatJet turns the records in your JSON into an XLSX sheet, flattening nested fields into columns and freezing a bold header row. The conversion runs in your browser, so the data stays on your device.

About the formats

JSONJSON file

JSON is the text format web APIs and apps use to exchange data: objects, lists, text, numbers and true or false values, nested as deep as needed.

XLSXExcel workbook

XLSX is the workbook format of Microsoft Excel since 2007: sheets of cells with formulas, formatting and charts.

Converted with Data converters (Papa Parse, yaml, fast-xml-parser), Data converters on Workers.

Questions

What does the Excel sheet look like?

One sheet with a bold header row that stays frozen at the top as you scroll, and columns sized to their contents.

How does nested JSON fit into a spreadsheet?

Nested objects are flattened into dotted headers such as address.city. Lists of simple values are joined in one cell with “; ”, and lists of objects are written into the cell as JSON text.

My JSON is an API response. Which part becomes the rows?

FormatJet picks the longest list of records it finds, so the records inside a wrapper like {"results": [ … ]} become rows. A JSON file holding just one object gives a single row.

Is there a size limit?

JSON files up to 50 MB convert in your browser, but a table with more rows or columns than Excel allows is refused instead of being trimmed.
